Shaftsbury the home of Gold Hill made famous by the Hovis advert, is a small market town in Dorset. The town has magnificent views over Thomas Hardy’s Blackmore Vale thanks to its hilltop location. Some buildings date back to the 15th century and the town history goes back to Saxon times.

 

The ruins of Shaftsbury Abbey and the Gold Hill Museum are very popular with the towns many independent shops and Swan’s Lane, the creative heart of Shaftsbury.

 

Refreshments – the town has a number of cafes and restaurants for both a coffee break and lunch.

 

Accessibility – Shaftsbury is located on a hill and therefore has many streets which are steep. Be prepared for a number of ups and downs!

 

The town of Salisbury dating back to medieval times is quite a contrast to Shaftsbury.

There is a modern shopping centre along with many independent shops.

The awe-inspiring Cathedral rising up from the water-meadows has been described as Britian’s best view.
