STOCKBRIDGE VILLAGE AND ROSES AT MOTTISFONT
Our day begins at the charming village of Stockbridge. Lying in the heart of the test valley the wide picturesque high street reflects its early role as part of a drovers road where it was common to see flocks of sheep and herds of cattle being driven through the town on route from Wales.
The town with its long and varied history has inspired many poets over the years and there is a trail of 10 poems set in stone, metal plaques and etched glass, for you to follow as you wander through the town centre discovering its treasures.
Later we make a short drive to Mottisfont a historical house, garden and country estate managed by the National Trust.
The Gardens
Enjoy exploring the splendours of the Gardens. Here your senses will be awakened by the rainbow of colours and the fragrant scents of thousands of blooms from more than 500 hundred varieties of " Old Fashioned " roses.
Make your way along winding paths and wide-open spaces to the Riverside Walk where you will discover more hidden gems.
The House
Take a self-guided walk through the House where you will find out about the eight centuries of history buried within Mottisfont's walls. An Augustinian Priory was founded here in 1201.
Today hints of Mottisfont's medieval past live alongside the stylish redevelopment that took place in the early 20th century.
Food and drink
The Old Kitchen Cafe and the Coach House Cafe serve drinks, cakes, sandwiches, light lunches and snacks. There are plenty of benches dotted about on the sweeping lawns where you can enjoy a picnic.
