PENSHURST PLACE AND HEVER CASTLE
THURSDAY 3RD JULY
This is a special combined visit to two historical sites both steeped in Tudor history.
In the morning, we visit Penshurst Place and will have a tour of the house during which we will discover its
rich medieval and Tudor history. As a taster of its rich history, the awe-inspiring medieval Barons Hall
was completed in 1341 as a country retreat for the Mayor of London. The stately home and gardens were
once used as a hunting lodge for Henry VII. The Sidney family, who still own the house today, were gifted
the property in 1552 by Henry VIIIs son, Edward VI. Wander the unique Elizabethan gardens which have
records going back to the 14th century.
Refreshments The Porcupine Pantry café provides hot & cold drinks, snacks and cooked meals.
Accessibility - Inside Penshurst Place there are steps and stairs. There is no lift. The gardens are accessible
to wheelchairs and paths are mostly tarmac and grass.
After lunch we travel the short distance to Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Dating back
to the 14 th century, Hever Castle formed the unlikely backdrop to a sequence of tumultuous events that
changes the course of Britains history, monarch and religion.
The magnificent award-winning gardens are set in over 100 acres of grounds. Marvel at the Pompeiian
Wall and classical statuary in the Italian Garden; admire the topiary chess set in the English Rose Garden.
There are fountains, cascades, a 38 acre lake, grottoes and various walks to enjoy.
Refreshments There are multiple places to eat and drink across the Hever Castle estate, so there should
be no problem finding a cup of tea and something sweet to accompany it!
Accessibility There are steps and stairs within the Castle and no lift. Most of the gardens are on one level
so wheelchair accessible with the majority of steps ramped.
