MILESTONES MUSEUM & THE VYNE

The morning will be spent exploring the Milestones living History Museum in Basingstoke.

Immerse yourself in the past at Milestones, Hampshire’s museum of living history. Explore the museum’s streets, shops and buildings to discover how people used to live, buy a ration of sweets from the 1940s sweet shop, view the unique collection of vintage vehicles and have a go in the penny arcade! Your trip to Hampshire past will take you as far back as the age of the Victorians, with cobbled streets, a replica Victorian school room – complete with chalkboard and teacher’s desk – and even a working printing press.

 

Refreshments – Drinks, hot & cold food is available in the café or pub within the museum.

 

Accessibility - Milestones is built on three levels with cobbled floors and tramlines in the Victorian and Edwardian parts of the museum. Some difficulty may be experienced by wheelchair users in this area. The 1930s area is flat, although some parts of the flooring are textured. Both areas have pavements with dropped kerbs. A map is available at reception showing a route around the museum which avoids most of the cobblestones.

 

Our driver will then take us the short journey to The Vyne, a former Tudor powerhouse turned 17th century family home. Once an important Tudor palace, this atmospheric mansion has some illustrious connections, from Henry V111 to Jabe Austen.

For over 500 years it was owned and shaped by just two families, the Sandys and the Chutes. Each generation enriched the property, resulting in an incredible range of architecture and interiors.

The gardens, acres of meadows and woods are wildlife -rich and extensive.

 

Refreshments - The Brewhouse tea-room serves light refreshments

 

Accessibility – Access to the first floor is via a staircase only and this has no handrail. There is an accessible route through the gardens with hard gravel pathways. Paths in the woods are rough with tree roots in places – it can be muddy.
