HUNGERFORD & HORSE BOAT CANAL CRUISE WITH TEA & CAKE
FRIDAY 3RD JULY
We spend the morning in the charming market town of Hungerford, a quintessentially English destination renowned for its unique shopping experience. The north-south High Street you see today was laid out in the 13th century on the footprint of an older village. The town centre is a treasure trove of over 400 dealers and numerous outlets, including antique shops and fairs that attract visitors from all over the world. The range of shops includes a fantastic mix of independents and more well-known high street stores.
Theres an open-air market every Wednesday we do choose our days with our travellers in mind!
Other places of interest are St Lawrences Church, close to the canal which was built in the late 19th century on the site of two earlier churches and, the brick-built Jubilee Bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal. This was constructed in 1799, initially for horses and waggons. The bridge has been strengthened in recent year with a wooden pedestrian bridge built alongside.
Refreshments plenty of cafes and restaurants for coffee and lunch
Accessibility the main shopping area of Hungerford is flat enabling easy access
In the early afternoon we travel to Kintbury Lock for a truly unique experience, a two-hour cruise on a horse-drawn barge along the Kennet and Avon canal. We will be experiencing a little bit of yesteryear as horses traditionally pulled commercial barges from the mid-18th through to the late 19th century. What a peaceful way to travel in the mad world of today!
During the cruise you will enjoy tea and cake aboard the barge.
Accessibility There are just a few steps to negotiate onto the barge
