Sudeley Castle & GW Railway

SUDELEY CASTLE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE & WARWICKSHIRE RAILWAY

TUESDAY 22ND JULY

In the morning, we visit Sudeley Castle which remains the only private castle in England to have a Queen

buried within the grounds – Queen Catherine Parr, the last and surviving wife of King Henry VIII – who lived

and died at Sudeley.

Henry, Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, Queen Elizabeth I, Richard III and King Charles I have all played a part

in Sudeley’s history. After the end of the Civil War Sudeley lay neglected and derelict for nearly 200 years.

In 1837 Sudeley was rescued by the wealthy Worcester glove-makers, bothers John & William Dent. They

began an ambitious restoration programme.

Sudeley Castle is now the home of Elizabeth, Lady Ashcombe and family. The family is committed to the

continued preservation of the castle, its treasures and the ongoing restoration and regeneration of the

gardens.

Refreshments – The Pavillion Café and Castle Coach House offer a selection of hot & cold drinks, cakes,

snacks and lunches for you to purchase.

Accessibility – the castle rooms and exhibition areas are unsuitable for wheelchair users. There is a

circular route around the gardens which is wheelchair accessible.

There are steps and stairs within the castle – there is no lift.

We leave Sudeley to travel the short distance to Cheltenham Racecourse and the Gloucestershire

Warwickshire Race Course Station for our one hour ride on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam

Railway.

There will be time for you to take photos and admire the carriages and engine as it enters the

station. We will then board our steam train for the one-hour journey through the rolling countryside of the

Cotswolds to Broadway.

The coach will take us from the station the short distance into Broadway so you may have a short time to

wander the High Street and pop into one or two of the intriguing independent shops before we depart for

home.

Refreshments – There is a snack bar on the station at Cheltenham. Broadway has a number of cafes along

the main street.

Accessibility – There will be a short walk both to and from the train. Assistance is available if required for

boarding the train. The main street in Broadway is slightly uphill.
